Called to Duty? Don't let your studies slip ...

Most servicemen and women have more to worry about than their studies when called up for active duty or shipped out from their base to a foreign land. But in those periods of down time when not on patrol or active work, distance learning is a good way to keep educational goals from falling behind.

Here is a story from the The Metro West Daily News about how distance learning for some members of the U.S. armed services is helping them do just that.

Josephine Rodriguez's diploma from Framingham State College was almost within her grasp when her Army National Guard unit was called up for duty.

The FSC senior only needed to complete one more course to get her bachelorlinks's degree in biology. Now stationed in Scania, Iraq, with the 110th Maintenance Company based out of Ayer, Rodriquez is far from FSC, but her professors are doing their best to allow her to complete her degree while deployed in the Middle East.

Originally Rodriguez was told she would only be gone for six months, said her adviser Charlotte Zampini, an assistant professor of biology, but that was not to be.

"She was going to come back in the fall semester," Zampini said. "Then they told her she would be gone (all) year."
