Study Shows Distance Learning as Effective as Traditional Learning

A new study from the University of Florida shows that distance learning can be as effective (or more effective) than traditional classroom learning.
Government Technology reports on the study's early results:
"Like some earlier studies, we're finding that learning through online schooling is effective," said Dr. Richard Ferdig, associate professor of education technology at UF's College of Education. "But the UF study moves beyond that, focusing more on when and how online instruction works most effectively. Teachers are finding innovative ways to engage students online, and virtual schools are demonstrating that they can be at least as effective as traditional, face-to-face instruction. Many online learners already know that virtual learning can be extremely effective, particularly for those who thrive with independent learning situations. But, hopefully, the study will help convince the few employers and universities that remain skeptical.
