The Dreaded Job Interview
Jan 8th, 2004So you've finally got a degree. Now what do you do? If you are an English major like I was, you'll probably have to go on for postgraduate work, preferably in something more marketable. Either that, or you'll have to light yourself a candle, find your self a manhole and suck in those Subterranean Homesick Blues and hunker away in your bunker to write your novel. I did that for a while as well, but it's not for everyone. Just make sure you like Ramen noodles and Rice and beans. Luckily, I'm a damn good cook.
Over a year ago I was flown in for an interview for a writing job at a top university, and thought I did pretty well, but I guess my years as a freelance writer working alone much of the time had roughened my social and interview skills. I'd been interviewing others for so long I'd forgotten how it was to be interviewed myself. I also had a bit of a cold, so was chewing gum to keep my throat from cracking. A week after I found out I didn't get the job, I wrote to find out if they had any comments on what I could perhaps do better and this ' gum chewing' was mentioned as one of the strikes against me. Yes, it's a load of crap, but still … I guess they'll get you for anything.
Here's another personal tale of interview trouble and woe by the pseudonymous Lisa Ann Gosed for the Chronicle of Higher Education.
